A sports report tells the reader what happened in a game or match, including the highlights and anything controversial or groundbreaking that may have occurred. It is the role of the writer to bring the sporting event back to life for the reader without miring the reader in dull details or personal interpretations. A sports report is a good way to learn about the art of writing concisely, carefully and with tempered enthusiasm.
Before you start writing

- What do you know about individual players? Try to read up on their backgrounds to gain an idea of their personalities, past sporting history and hopes for the future. This human element can add a lot to your writing, helping to make these people more real to the readers.
Writing the report

- For example: "Conditions looked difficult for the two teams, despite the groundsman's best efforts to clear the pitch before the game."

- For example: "For the next twenty minutes, the home side dominated - with 80 percent possession."

- For example: "The resulting free kick was beautifully curled into the top right corner."
Finishing off

- For example: "The victory lifted them out of the relegation zone and into the top half of the table."
Expert Q&A
- Read many other sports writers' work to glean from their work what styles you like the most and what sorts of phrasing, expressions and wording you think you'd like to adopt when developing your own sports writing style. Thanks Helpful 3 Not Helpful 2
- Be careful as to how much of your own opinion you inject into the sports report. If you're an authority on the sport, you will have more liberty to pass judgment on things that happened in the game or event but if not, hold back on making such expert judgments and instead, seek to get across the correct facts backed up by statistics and interview quotes. How to write a match report

Christmas 2023: Top 5 Christmas Presents for Football Players.
Writing that all-important match report can seem daunting but it’s a popular part of any club website . Many players, parents and supporters will go online primarily to check scores, league tables and see if they’re mentioned.
With this step-by-step guide, we’ll help you create a professional match report ready for your club website and even the local press.
Step 1. Preparation
If you know you will be writing a match report, remember to take a pen and paper to the game, or use your smartphone to make notes. Consider audio notes as an option as you can describe the atmosphere, including what else you notice around the game itself. It’s quicker than writing and it will make sense when you come to listen back.
To save time, try to get hold of the team selection or a list of players before the start. (After the game, try to clarify details that you missed, controversy or anything that didn’t make sense).
Finally, always take a camera. Publishing photos with your match report will instantly increase the number of views. A camera phone is fine if the action is near the touchline and you might want to record some video clips at the same time.
However, crisp sports photography usually needs a digital camera with a decent zoom to catch the fast-paced action and to get close enough.

Step 2. Headline and tagline
Your headline must attract the reader’s attention in seconds, so make sure you use a short, sharp sentence, no longer than six words. Be descriptive.
‘Old Boys FC win epic battle’ or ‘Smith scores hat-trick in thriller’
The tagline should then be used to provide key details, including the final result in one or two sentences.
‘Olds Boys FC come from behind in wet and windy conditions to win 4-3 at home to league leaders Villa Park. Old Boys now go top with 3 games left to play.’
‘Toby Smith leads from the front to score 3 tries and help save Luton from relegation.’
Note: We will always list the classified result at the top of the match report, so you do not need to enter this in the headline or tag line. You should instead use the space to be creative.
Step 3. Content
When writing the body of the text start by listing key events in the order they happened.
Think of key events as things you might include if you were making a highlights package of the game. Examples include:
- Goals, tries or wickets
- Penalties or conversations
- Substitutes on and off the field
- Red or yellow cards
- Injuries or stoppages in play
- Also include: exciting periods of play, well-executed moves (and controversy!)

- What was the weather like?
- What state was the pitch in?
- How were the conditions?
- How many were in attendance?
Think about background information such as :
- What have been the past results between the two teams?
- Where are they in the league table?
- Which team has the better form going into the game?

Now link the events together, making sure you follow these simple rules:
- Be specific, do not ramble
- Use short paragraphs no longer than two sentences
- Include where appropriate the names of players and coaches
If you need inspiration then look no further than BBC Sport or Sky Sports for structure and how bite-sized match reports are.
Step 4. Summing up
Once the body of the report is completed, write a conclusion summing up the team’s performance.
Why not go full-on roving reporter and interview the big character from the match? Include a quote from the coach, team manager or an outraged supporter.
Be responsible and credible though.
If you’re going to quote someone then use quote marks and make sure you have an accurate record of exactly what they said (a recording that was agreed or written record).
Become your very own pundit by throwing in some match analysis.
Include a list of areas that needs work, such as improving the line-out or creating more chances in attack; contemplate key decisions in the match, such as a potential wrong substitution or vital error.

Finally, make sure to finish by promoting upcoming games and training sessions:
- Where has this result left you in the league standings?
- Who are you playing next and where?
- What time should you meet?
- Are you training this week? If so, which day and at what time?
The match report will be read by all players and parents so make the most of it. If it’s published consistently and promoted then it can be a way to majorly grow your audience.
Step 5. Checking & formatting
Ok, so you’ve created this masterpiece of writing. It is the match report to top all match reports.
Before you publish and promote it ( always promote it via email and social media!), then check it carefully.
Read it a few times slowly to look for spelling or grammar mistakes. You’ve gone to all of that effort, this is the icing on the cake. If you need help, there are free tools like Grammarly .
If you have any links, make sure they work and go to the right place. The note about formatting is to make it as readable online as possible. Don’t publish a well-written match report - but in a single block which is really difficult to read. Break up the text into short paragraphs, include images if it’s a longer article and use headings in bold to achieve the same thing.
Step 5. Photos
To make your match report an instant success - always use a photo. Even if you lose by 50 goals, users will still read the report to view the photos.
Pick out a selection to publish as an album and pick the best photo to use at the top of the page.

So make sure you encourage parents and supporters to upload their images.
If you do not have a photo from the game, use a photo of a player from a past game or a team photo. Either way, always use a photo!
In addition, go one better and use video. The demand for watching video clips online is huge. It needs to be stable footage (not jerky) and if you’re moving to capture a moment in the match then slow and steady.
Short and sharp is best. 5-10 second clips create impact and can also be used on social media as a ‘hook’ to then promote your match report.
Benefits of creating a good match report

- Encourage more visitors
- Boost income (from commercial partners)

Football, also known as soccer, is a sport that has captured the hearts of millions around the world. It is a game that is not only physically demanding but also emotionally charged. A football match is an event that brings people together, ignites passion, and creates memories that last a lifetime. In this essay, we will explore the three main aspects of a football match that make it such a thrilling experience.
Before the match begins, the stadium is filled with an electric atmosphere as fans eagerly await the start of the game. The excitement is palpable, and the air is filled with chants, cheers, and the occasional roar of a vuvuzela. Fans dress up in their team’s colors, wave flags, and hold up banners to show their support. The anticipation builds as the players make their way onto the pitch, and the crowd erupts into a deafening roar.
Once the match begins, the players take center stage, displaying their physical prowess and skill. The game is fast-paced, and the players are constantly moving, running, and tackling. The players’ agility and coordination are on full display as they dribble past defenders, shoot for goal, and make crucial passes. The physicality of the game is also evident, with players often clashing into each other and battling for the ball. It is a spectacle to behold, and the crowd is captivated by the players’ performance.
The emotions and reactions of the crowd and players after the match’s outcome is determined.
The outcome of the match determines the emotions and reactions of both the crowd and the players. If the home team wins, the stadium erupts into a frenzy of cheers, chants, and celebrations. The players embrace each other, and the joy on their faces is evident. On the other hand, if the home team loses, there is a palpable sense of disappointment in the air. The crowd falls silent, and the players are dejected, knowing that they have let their fans down. Regardless of the outcome, a football match always elicits strong emotions and reactions from both the crowd and the players.
In conclusion, a football match is an incredible experience that brings people together and creates lasting memories. The excitement and anticipation before the match, the physical intensity and skill displayed by the players during the game, and the emotions and reactions of the crowd and players after the match’s outcome is determined are all part of what makes a football match so thrilling. It is a sport that transcends borders and unites people from all walks of life.
Football, also known as soccer, is one of the most popular sports in the world. Millions of fans gather to watch their favorite teams compete in high-stakes matches that are filled with excitement, passion, and drama. The excitement and anticipation of the crowd before the match.
Before the match begins, the crowd is buzzing with excitement and anticipation. Fans arrive at the stadium hours before kick-off, wearing their team colors and waving flags and banners. As the players warm up on the pitch, the noise level in the stadium increases, with chants and songs ringing out from the stands. The atmosphere is electric, and you can feel the tension building as the start of the match draws closer.
The physicality and intensity of the players during the match.
Once the match begins, the players take to the field with a fierce determination to win. The physicality of the game is on full display, with players jostling for position, making tackles, and sprinting up and down the pitch. The intensity of the game is palpable, with every pass, shot, and save eliciting a roar of approval or disappointment from the crowd. The players push themselves to the limit, knowing that every moment could be the difference between victory and defeat.
The jubilation or disappointment of the fans at the end of the match.
At the end of the match, the emotions of the fans are on full display. If their team has won, there is a sense of jubilation and celebration, with fans hugging and high-fiving each other, and singing victory songs. If their team has lost, however, the mood is somber and disappointed, with fans leaving the stadium quietly, heads bowed in defeat. The outcome of the game can have a profound effect on the fans, who invest so much of their time, energy, and emotion into supporting their team.
In conclusion, a football match is a complex and multifaceted event, filled with excitement, passion, and drama. From the anticipation of the crowd before the match, to the physicality and intensity of the players during the game, to the jubilation or disappointment of the fans at the end of the match, every aspect of the game is a testament to the power of sport to bring people together and evoke strong emotions.

Match Analysis in Football: How to Write a Good Report
Posted by Ashley Munson | Sep 7, 2021 | Offseason | 0

Watching football on a Friday evening is a genuinely excellent end of a workweek. It’s always accompanied by a meetup with friends and drinks. Sometimes, though, you should stay at home and watch a football match alone. This always occurs when the game requires a good analysis and a written report.
Writing a report is a demanding task. Not only do you have to give up on hanging out with friends, but you should also be highly focused when analyzing the match. Other than that, you need to know what to include in the report and in which order to put it. At some point, you might even think about delegating the task. Doing that is elementary; it takes a few clicks to buy custom essay or any other written document. Nonetheless, you might want to consider writing the task yourself, especially after reading this step-by-step guide. Also, ask essayhub “write my essay online” to get your papers done quickly
Learning background
Before doing a thorough analysis, it is imperative to learn more about the two teams . When researching, pay attention to team players, most vital participants, and coaches. It will shed light on teams and their capabilities. Also, make sure to locate some information about substitutions. You may also provide the physical characteristics of players and highlight the dark horses of the match. This will spark the readers’ attention and make them follow the analysis.
Watching a match and taking notes
Whether or not your friends surround you when watching a match, it is effortless to succumb to emotions. As a result, your analytical thinking becomes shady, and you can’t examine the game objectively.
Watching the match alone may not be helpful, either, if you don’t record crucial episodes. Try jotting down everything you find essential. Even if you don’t include specific notes in your work, they will still be helpful to learn strategies, personnel decisions, and the outcomes of the game.
Including critical information right away
There is no need to keep an intrigue when writing a football report. Readers need to know the final score, who scored a touchdown, field goal, or safety. It would be best if you provided such info in the report’s introduction.
Importantly, though, you should balance numbers and descriptive elements when writing an introduction. Although the audience craves to know who won, it doesn’t need to learn everything immediately. Besides, too many numbers can tire the readers and make them feel they know everything about the match and can skip reading what’s left.
Inverting a pyramid
Inverting a pyramid is prevalent in report writing. It points out critical events in the match as early in the report as possible. When a player scores a touchdown, don’t leave this trump at the end of your report. Such key information must appear at the beginning of a body part.
Try sorting out such moments by importance. For instance, put a touchdown in the first section, a field goal in the following paragraph, etc. You may add some interesting info, like those about skirmishes and other minor conflicts at the end, to spice up the content. But again, be cautious; include such information only when analyzing the audience and knowing the readers would appreciate it.
Citing direct participants
It is hard to consider various perspectives when watching a match. What we find unimportant can actually be critical. If you want to write more than a dry report, get familiar with interviews with direct participants of the match. Choosing the best quotes voiced by coaches and players will make your report insightful and let the readers look at the match and its outcomes differently.
Analyzing the teamplay
Writing a report is more than reviewing the match. Apart from giving information about the teams, players, and scores, it is crucial to analyze the entire play. The latter comprises multiple aspects. Regardless of your involvement in football, make sure to write about:
- Psychological conditions: competitiveness, concentration, collective spirit
- Physical attributes: stamina and intensity
- Technical characteristics: performance of technical aspects
- Tactics: unity in executing actions
- Up and downsides: accomplishments and failures
Including the Nash Equilibrium
The Nash Equilibrium is a mathematical concept in game theory. It contains several factors determining whether a team’s strategy was more offensive or defensive. Each strategy profile involves all the players’ actions at a particular moment in the match. The job of the Nash equilibrium is to identify the strategy profile that is the most successful for every player.
Keep in mind that it strongly relies on mathematics. So if you have a knack for it and statistics, you can build solid work. Conversely, if you are unsure, we recommend leaning more toward the team’s behavior and actions that do not require a mathematical approach.
Drafting and editing the piece
Once you collect information from the above, you can draft your work and shape it according to a structure. Make sure to have a clear introduction with an opening sentence, background, and key information; a body with sorted information by importance; and a conclusion with a summation.
After writing the first draft:
- Step away from it for a while.
- Take a break to restore your attention and analytical thinking and reapproach the piece.
- Check the content along with its coherence and accuracy.
Correct apparent mistakes and ensure citing authoritative sources accordingly. When you do that, your report should be ready for publishing.

Teacher resources: How to write a match report

Watching sport and writing about it is a dream job for many people.
But how do you write a really good report which tells the story of the match and really makes the reader feel like they were there?
There's lots of different ways of going about it, but here are some general rules about the art of writing a match report.
- NB this guide is written with football in mind, but is equally applicable to lots of other team sports like rugby, hockey etc - and most of the basic principles can be applied to all kinds of other sports.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
Try to find out about the players, managers and the situation at the teams involved. Look at the league table so you know the significance of any result and read newspapers/websites and watch the TV/listen to the radio.
Is the manager under pressure? Is a young player being talked up as a candidate for his international team? Did somebody from the club say something interesting in the pre-match press conference? Try to anticipate what the story might be - but be prepared to ditch this idea if things don't turn out the way you expect!
All this information will help you when it comes to writing reports - making it more interesting than a list of "this happened, then that happened, then this other thing happened..."
GET ORGANISED!

Don't overlook practical things! Try to get to the match in plenty of time so you soak up the atmosphere - it's very stressful struggling through traffic with kick-off approaching!
And check that you have everything you might need: a pen and paper, clipboard, batteries for any equipment you might be using (cameras, dictaphones etc)
Find where you're sitting and get yourself set up. Even if it's a school game and you're standing on the touchline, think about where you'll get the best view.
WRITE IT DOWN!
It's not a memory test, so don't turn it in to one! If you rely on memory, before you know it you'll be getting players' names mixed up and confused about the order that things happened in! Get your notepad out and get scribbling!
One tried-and-tested method is to have a notepad and draw a line down the middle with the home team on one side and the away team on the other and jot things down whenever something of significance happened - in football, this would be goals, red and yellow cards, good chances, bad refereeing decisions etc.

And you also might note more general themes as they occur to you: "Team A lacking a cutting edge" or "Team B controlling midfield" and so on.
You might want to develop your own shorthand eg YC for yellow card, MC for missed chance etc - as long as it saves you time and you can decipher it afterwards, it's fine!
At half-time, read back over your notes and highlight the most significant events - a missed chance in the first five minutes that seemed important at the time might not be quite so crucial if the team is 4-0 up!
See if any general themes are emerging - is one team losing possession too easily or is one player having a nightmare that is affecting his team?
Carry on with this in the second half.
PLAN YOUR STORY
Review your notes again at the end of the match, obviously with the final result in mind.
What was the most significant thing that happened? Was it a late wining goal, or an early sending-off? Or perhaps it was an easy chance squandered?
Or is it the fact that one team has moved out of the relegation zone or gone top of the league?
One good test is to think about what you would tell your friends if they asked you about the game. If, for example, you were talking about Man City v Man Utd in April 2012 , you probably wouldn't say "...well in the first minute, Man Utd had a corner and then in the third minute Gael Clichy overhit his cross..."
You'd naturally go straight to the most interesting thing, which might be the winning goal or the fact that Man City had moved closer to winning the title.
This most interesting thing will probably feature in the introduction of your report, and then you can move on to the other major incidents.
Don't feel like you have to mention everything you noted down - concentrate on the most important events. Remember that it's an overview, not a blow-by-blow account.
Try not to rely too heavily on clichés and make sure you get details like players' names and positions correct. Nothing undermines a report more than getting basic information wrong!
With an online report, most people read a few paragraphs and then click away to something else so make sure that all the main details are fairly early on in the story. Don't leave the winning goal until the last sentence!
And think about how long your report should be: if it's for a school newspaper, maybe find out how much space there will be and adjust your report accordingly. As a general rule of thumb, keep it short and sweet where you can.
Try to add context, which might be general point about a team lacking ability in midfield, a specific fact from the match - eg that fans were chanting for the manager to be sacked or explaining what the result means in terms of the league table.
Details like that help readers to understand the game much better.
ANYTHING MORE?
As well as writing the report about what actually happened on the pitch, you may also want to include some insight from the players or coaches involved.
If you can speak to them to ask what they made of the game and the key incidents then great. If not, keep an ear out for what they say to other journalists at press conferences etc. If you think it's relevant to your story then work out a way to include it.
BE BALANCED!

BBC presenter Sonali Shah gives her top tips for reporting on sport events and stories.
You may be a fanatic Arsenal fan, but if your report of a 1-1 draw is all about how brilliant Arsenal were and how terrible the opposition were, people probably won't take it seriously.
Think about your audience. If you're writing for an Arsenal fans' website then by all means focus more on Arsenal - but still maintain some balance. If the other team played well, then say so!
At the BBC, the audience is very wide and varied so journalists strive to be impartial and not let their own feelings as fans get in the way of their reporting.

How to complete a referee match report

New functionality has been added ahead of the 2021/22 season allowing referees to submit reports into FA Full-Time. This article will take you through how to complete a report as a referee. League guidance is available here: League Guidance
All referees can now sign into Full-Time using their FA Account and do not require a FA Full-Time Login invite (sign in using the same details they would use to submit discipline via. Whole Game System). From within FA Full-Time, they will only see fixtures they have been assigned to by the league.
The sign-in link is here: Sign in FA Full-Time
After signing in, the referee will be taken to the "Admin Home" page whereby any fixtures in the last 7 days (or upcoming 7 days) will appear. Please click "Enter Referee Reports" or "My Referee Reports" in order to access all of your reports

In order to edit a report, after accessing "my referee report" tab the referee should click "Edit Report"

Once the referee has clicked "Edit report" they will be taken into the report whereby they will complete:
a) confirm the score
b) complete 6x FA Questions (standard on all referee reports on Full-time)
c) any extra league questions

After completing the report, the referee should click "Update" in order to save the form and submit it to the league
At the bottom of the form, the referee will also get the option to "Flag the report as important" - this will then display clearly to the league from within their dashboard if any reports have been flagged.

How to Write a Football Match Report
One of the functions of the central referee after the end of a football match is to write the match report. This is a very important document for both the football body and the refereeing association, due to its importance. The ability to write a good and accurate report are the hallmarks of a competent match official.
What constitutes a standard conformity report?
starting time The actual start time of the match must be clearly defined including the duration of the match. Extra time given at the end of each halves including the date of the match shall also be included in the match report.
Team name Soccer is usually played between two teams with their own groups of players and officials. The match report usually contains the name of both the home team and the away team. The home team’s name usually comes first.
The name of the match venue The name of the place where the game was played must be written in the report. Matches are usually played in the stadium except where other facilities are used such as school pitches and training grounds in hotels and organisations. Anyway, the name of the place is absolutely essential. The behavior of fans and officials at match venues was also included in the writing.
The name and position of the match officials There are usually four match officials in a regular football match. They are: the central referee, assistant referee 1, assistant referee 2 and the fourth official. Each of these officials has a column appended to their names, association, designation, and signature. The name of the match commissioner must be entered in your writing.
Substitutions, alerts and expulsions All substitutions made by both teams must be recorded in the match report. Warnings and expulsions issued to any team must also be recorded. Remember to clearly state the offense the player committed for which he was cautioned or sent off as stated in the Laws of the Game.
The difference between the latter and the latter lies in the recording of the incident that led to the warning and expulsion issued. When such incidents are documented, consultations are held with the other match officials to ensure that the reports are as accurate as possible.
Weather and stadium conditions Weather conditions can lead to the cancellation of the match especially when the weather is inclement. A live description of the stadium and weather conditions must be included in the report.
goals scored The number of goals scored and the name and jersey numbers of the player who scored the goal must be well documented. The final score between both teams and the eventual winner will also be included in writing.
The full report is normally given to the football body responsible for organizing the game either by post or email. The standard period for submitting such a write-up is usually 48 hours after the match. It is important to note that all incidents that occurred off the field of play must also be recorded, especially in the case of intimidation by team officials against match officials. At the end of the report, your name, referee association and signature must be appended to the report.

Fulham 0-1 Manchester United: Bruno Fernandes scores in stoppage time to relieve pressure on Erik ten Hag
Report as Bruno Fernandes' stoppage-time strike earns Manchester United a 1-0 win at Fulham; pressure relieved on Erik ten Hag as his side bounce back from successive 3-0 defeats; Scott McTominay saw early goal controversially disallowed; Man Utd go sixth, Fulham 14th

Manchester United claimed a vital win to relieve the pressure on Erik ten Hag as Bruno Fernandes struck in stoppage time to secure a 1-0 win at Fulham.
After back-to-back 3-0 defeats against Manchester City and Newcastle , questions were increasingly being asked of the manager, and eyebrows were raised before kick-off when Marcus Rashford was left out of the squad.
Man Utd explained that the forward - who was criticised by Ten Hag on Friday for going out to celebrate his birthday in the wake of the defeat to City - was injured.

In Rashford's place, it was McTominay who found the net for what he thought was his fourth goal in as many Premier League games - only for the officials to decide Harry Maguire was marginally offside in the build-up after a lengthy review.
Man Utd rarely troubled Fulham's goal again - until Joao Palhinha's scuffed clearance found Fernandes on the edge of the area, with the captain squeezing a finish inside the near post and providing a much-needed boost to his embattled manager.

How Fernandes stepped up when it mattered for Man Utd

After eight defeats in their opening 15 games this season, the heat on Ten Hag had grown to such a level that Man Utd felt the need this week to deny reports they were contemplating a successor for the Dutchman.
The furore over Rashford’s off-field antics - and his apparent failed fitness test before the game - hardly helped the manager, but McTominay looked to have handed his side a perfect start when he turned in Alejandro Garnacho’s low pass from a free-kick.

However, his celebrations were halted by what turned out to be a lengthy VAR review. Garnacho and McTominay were both onside but referee John Brooks was eventually called to the monitor to determine whether Maguire - who was marginally offside - was interfering with play when he tried and failed to get to the original free-kick.
Brooks quickly decided the goal should be disallowed because of a ‘subjective offside’. However, whether that constituted a clear and obvious error - and whether Maguire even impacted Fulham’s defenders - is up for debate.
What is a subjective offside?
A player in an offside position at the moment the ball is played or touched* by a team-mate is only penalised on becoming involved in active play by interfering with play by playing or touching a ball passed or touched by a team-mate or interfering with an opponent by: - Preventing an opponent from playing or being able to play the ball by clearly obstructing the opponent’s line of vision - Challenging an opponent for the ball - Clearly attempting to play a ball which is close when this action impacts on an opponent - Making an obvious action which clearly impacts on the ability of an opponent to play the ball *The first point of contact of the 'play' or 'touch' of the ball should be used
That controversial incident was the only one of note from a disappointing first half which saw both sides muster one shot on target between them.
Fulham appeared to belatedly sense an opportunity against their beleaguered hosts and went close to opening the scoring twice in a matter of moments.
- Man Utd made six changes from the side that lost to Newcastle, bringing in Wan-Bissaka, Evans, McTominay, Eriksen, Fernandes and Hojlund for Reguilon, Lindelof, Casemiro, Mount, Hannibal and Martial.
- Rashford missed out with what Man Utd said was a heavy knock to his leg - just one day after Ten Hag called his decision to go clubbing after the defeat to Man City “unacceptable”.
- Fulham made six changes from the team that won at Ipswich, with Leno, Ream, Robinson, Palhinha, Iwobi and Willian coming in for Rodak, De Fougerolles, Ballo-Toure, Lukic, Cairney and Decordova-Reid.
Andre Onana firstly denied Harry Wilson’s dipping volley with an unorthodox but ultimately effective save, before then parrying away Palhinha’s powerful close-range effort.
Rasmus Hojlund was removed after another frustrating outing - he received just one pass in the opposition box - and Man Utd looked to be heading for a third game without a win or a goal.

But Fernandes - who faced calls from Roy Keane last week to have the captaincy removed - stepped up in the final moments, pouncing on an error from his Portugal team-mate Palhinha and removing some of the storm clouds that had gathered over he and his manager.
Ten Hag: I know the players back me

Ten Hag admitted his side must be more creative in the final third but was happy with the "spirit" demonstrated by his side.
"It was a solid performance," said the Man Utd manager. "I am pleased, especially with the spirit in the team.
"I was pleased with the way we pressed. Fulham play very decent football from the back but we never allowed them to play from the back.
"It's clear we have to create more in the box but the composure on the ball was a step up."
Asked whether Fernandes' late winner - and the jubilant celebrations that followed - show the players still support him, Ten Hag said: "I knew that and we've seen it again.
"It's a good dressing room and they fight for each other. They know what the standards are. At Manchester United, they have to win every game. That is the attitude you need when you play for this club."
Silva: We lost emotional control

Marco Silva blamed Man Utd's winner on a loss of "emotional control" by his players, adding he felt Fulham deserved the three points.
"It’s a really difficult one for us to take," he said. "We cannot be punished the way we were.
"The way we conceded the goal was a matter of emotional control. In 10 seconds, we made three or four different mistakes. It’s difficult to understand.
"The second half showed we were in control and we gave almost nothing to Man Utd. We tried to win and we deserved it."
Opta stats: Another Man Utd late show
- Manchester United have scored two 90th-minute winning goals in the Premier League this season (also Scott McTominay vs Brentford), as many as they scored across the previous two seasons combined.
- Fulham are currently winless in 18 games against Manchester United in all competitions (D3 L15) since defeating them 3-0 in December 2009 in a Premier League encounter.
- Manchester United have won three consecutive away games in the Premier League for the first time since a 10-game run between June and December in 2020.
- Bruno Fernandes has been directly involved in 122 goals in 200 appearances for Manchester United in all competitions (67 goals, 55 assists), which is 33 more than any other player for the club since his debut in February 2020 (Marcus Rashford, 89).

'A bit of respite - but I do not think it is celebration times'
Analysis by Sky Sports' Gary Neville:

"They were never going to go from being as bad as they have been to being amazing in performance terms, but obviously a victory was so necessary - I've not seen a coaching staff as relieved at the end of a football match for a long time.
"Erik ten Hag and all his coaches were going over to all the players, they knew how big that was, the pressure has been building. And righty so as the performances have been awful, and that was a huge moment for them.
"But look, a bit of respite, but I do not think it is celebration times, but certainly something that will give them a few days off!
"It certainly will [turn the noise and negativity down], but I do not think anyone will be conned into thinking everything is fixed because the performance today was so poor, the team to be fair, he has so many injuries, but you can't believe there has been £1bn spent on it. It is incredible when you see the players that are out on the pitch.
"But they have won the game, Fulham are obviously struggling to score goals and that was a game of two teams who did not look very comfortable going forward, but Man Utd get a goal late on.
"I did say earlier in the week that Bruno Fernandes, as much as can be said about him, he does have world-class ability and that little bit of magic at the end and that is what Man Utd have, a few players who can produce in moments, there is no repeated patterns of play or style we see that stands out.
"We do see these moments sometimes that mean they can win football matches and every game they have won this season has been like that, one goal.
"They have been very lucky in games but they do have a habit of getting over the line against these teams that are weaker.
"It is the teams who have anything about them where they struggle..."

Fluminense beat Boca Juniors to win first Copa Libertadores title
- Boca Juniors 1-2 Fluminense aet
- Substitute John Kennedy scores winner and is sent off
Brazil’s Fluminense beat Argentina’s Boca Juniors 2-1 after extra time to win the Copa Libertadores for the first time in their history on Saturday.
The substitute John Kennedy’s 99th-minute goal at the Maracanã stadium in Rio de Janeiro decided the feisty final but, after celebrating the goal with the fans, he was shown a second yellow card and sent off.
The Argentinian striker German Cano had given Fluminense the lead with a goal in the 36th minute, but in the second half Luis Advíncula equalised for Jorge Almirón’s side with a shot from outside the box.
The match may prove to be a final appearance for Fluminense’s midfielder André , who has been heavily linked with Liverpool and Arsenal.
Before the end of the first half of extra time a brawl broke out between the players, with Boca’s Frank Fabra slapping Fluminense captain Nino, for which he was sent off.
“I recovered the ball for my son Lorenzo. I can tell him now that I am champion of the Libertadores,” said Cano, whose 13 goals this season in the competition was as many as all those scored by Boca’s players combined. “I want to dedicate this title to my family, the team, our director and the fans. It was a dream that we wanted to achieve since the first game,” Cano added.
Fluminense’s Fernando Diniz, who is also Brazil’s interim coach, finally delivered the elusive trophy - the equivalent to Europe’s Champions League - for a team who lost the 2008 final.
“We had a lot of chances today but in the end we failed to capitalise on the opportunity to take advantage of the extra man,” said the Boca goalkeeper Sergio Romero. “I think we did a great cup [run], we thank the people and we regret not giving them a joy today.”

Projected Shadow Matchups

Dolphins' Tyreek Hill vs. Chiefs' L'Jarius Sneed (Shadow)
It's speed vs. speed, as Sneed and his 4.37 wheels are set to try to keep up with arguably the league's most explosive player in Hill. Hill is rarely shadowed because he moves around so often, but Sneed has shadowed in seven consecutive games tracing back to Week 2. That includes showdowns with Calvin Ridley , DJ Moore , Garrett Wilson , Justin Jefferson , Jerry Jeudy , Josh Palmer and Courtland Sutton . While Hill is a unique matchup, he has aligned on the perimeter 66% of the time, and Sneed seems like a good bet to align opposite him on most of those plays. The Chiefs have allowed the sixth-fewest fantasy points to wide receivers this season.
